As a consumer, you need to check your scores regularly to ensure all is well in your credit world. The minimum recommendation is once per year, but I recommend at least twice per year. Any time you are planning a big-ticket purchase (car, home, etc.), you should definitely check your scores to make sure nothing has transpired outside of your knowledge.

The FICO scoring model ignores any self-generated inquiries because it’s understood that no one should be punished for checking their own scores. However, having a lender check your credit is what impacts your scores. Lender pulls create a “hard” inquiry which counts against you.
